We are a few hours away from the biggest Awards ceremony in Hollywood and the world. So what part do Immigrants play in the biggest show on earth? Talent is the one universal passport, and Hollywood has always had a place for immigrants � from German maestro Fritz Lang, who headed west when Hitler's minister of propaganda pressured him to take over Germany's top studio, to Polish Roman Polanski, who directed Los Angeles' definitive film noir, "Chinatown," and Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who became the first nonwhite to win an Academy Award for directing for "Brokeback Mountain," his reinvention of the western.
As Hollywood tries to stave off commercial stasis, the industry has been undergoing another chapter in its love affair with foreign writers and directors, particularly those from the Far East and Latin America. The international box office now accounts for more than 60% of a film's box office gross.
Of course, in this age of globalization, it's unclear what it even means to be a Hollywood immigrant anymore. "It doesn't matter where you live," says Paramount Classics chief John Lesher. "We all talk on the phone. We see each other at film festivals. You can edit a movie in Brazil, and your editor can be in London, and you can put it together seamlessly in perfect time."
So for Oscars 2010 we will not able to determine again who is an immigrant and who is not, an honestly who cares. What we want to know is who will win tonight.
For as lacking in suspense as the acting races are, the contest for the biggest prize couldn't be any closer. It's David vs. Goliath here, with 'Hurt Locker' and 'Avatar' seemingly trading "favorite" status every other day.
Unless they somehow split the votes and the Weinstein-backed 'Basterds' revises more history with an upset, the Oscar will go to either the highest-grossing Best Picture winner ever, or the lowest (in half a century, anyway). Be warned: This one is flip-a-coin close. Enjoy the Oscars tonight!!!!

I could take upto 3 months of sabbatical partially paid (1st month:100%, 2nd,3rd-50%) - I am currently on H1 Visa and working for the employer who sponsered by GC. I would like to know if there is any effect of taking sabbatical on my pending I485 ?

These aren't anything special, but I'm dying to post something while I try to make up my mind about what to do about getting my transparencies into the computer.

Hi
I am transferring my H1 to a firm on full time basis(not consulting company, product based). Currently I am on a project with A and I am going to transfer my H1 to B (which is 6 yrs old, american based company). I have pay slips from past 4 months, and I was on bench for 2 months where I didnt get my pasylips. For transfer I gave my past 4 months pay slips.
I have 2 questions here.
1) With company A, my LCA was not accurate. My LCA was of NY state & I am working in NJ.
Will this create any issue for my H1 transfer with company B which is VA and they have got the approved LCA.
2) Will there be any issue with my 2 months pay slips (which are of July & Aug). Right now I have submitted my H1 transfer with past 4 months payslips (Sep,Oct, Nov & Dec).
Please advice, I will really appreciate your suggestions on this ASAP.

Since you already have last 4 months pay slips and currently working , I dont see a problem , as long as your future employer can show that they have a legitimate opening and can pay you.

Generally attorneys charge a retainer fee. What that means is they are willing to represent you regarding any issues with a case. Some services are covered with retainer fee and they may charge additional fee based on any extra work. For Example AC21 Retainer fee is around 750/- where they submit a G28. Then for any RFE they generally charge in the range of 250$.
Thanks for the reply. I understand the retainer fee but I guess what bothers me is why the attorney wasn't up front about the situation or simply charge for a consult then going ahead with a retainer when we simply thought there was something more involve to do with my case at the time.
Its the way that the situation was manipulated to get us to retain this attorney for further use when at the time it wasn't needed that feels fraudulent.

I just efiled my EAD. (first one, not renewal). Do I need to send any supporting documents?
If so which ones?
They asked about previous EADs and I had 2 of them (one main, other interim 90 day rule) for my OPT after masters. Do I need to send a copy of those?

You don't need to send anything - they already have your I-485 application. They will ask if they want. After few weeks of e-filing, I was called for "biometrics". They only took my picture, and that was it. On 11th week I got my EAD. Mine was same as yours: first EAD but having one prior OPT. I mentioned OPT EAD in my application.

Status as of now : Applied as dependent (secondary) on my spouse 485 and have EAD and AP since July 2007.
2. My spouse : Primary applicant - EB3 (India), December 2003.
As the dates are NOT moving forward for EB3 (India), I want to port our GC application dates from my spouse priority ( EB3- India - December 2003) to mine (EB2 - India - September 2006)
My question is, Can I change my status from dependent (secondary ) on my spouse 485 to me being primary applicant by invoking my approved I-140 (EB2 - India - September 2006), If YES what would be the process.

You cant port because it is different labor of two different people. As far as I know, when the EB2 (India - September 2006), labor date is current, you can file another 485 as primary and your spouse as dependent. Optionally, you can choose to withdraw your previous filings. Hope, this helps. Others can throw some light on this.

Does any one remember if at the time of finger printing for 485, did they enter the Receipt Number, A# or both in their computer.
I am have some issues with multiple A#s and I need this information.

there are 2 scenarions in the situation:
1. if the petition was not selected through the lottery system , you lawyer must have got the entire package back alongwith the application fees. He would have recieved this package in May itself.
2. If the petition was selected through the lottery system, you lawyer must have recieved reciept notice stating that USCIS is processing the H1-B petition. If the petition was filed properly then your lawyer will recieve the approval before October (most of my friends have already recieved their H1-B approval notcies)
If the peition was selected..you can ask your lawyer for the reciept notice number and track the progress of the petition on the USCIS website.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I am starting this thread to infuse some life into the now dormant contributions to IV. I noticed in the past few days that we have been stuck @ 70,725. All of the core IV members are busy talking to the Senators regarding the SJC bills in Washington and generally working hard to push for our cause.
In the meanwhile i feel we as members of this group should again start the push for contributions as we are certain to face an uphill battle in the House.
So please contribute and ask your co-workers, friends, family to also do so now. This is the least we can do... :D
